Swift Logistics Group creates new cold chain logistics division.

Temperature controlled Bio science

Newbury-based Swift Logistics Group has created a new specialist service division specially designed to manage the controlled transportation of pharmaceuticals, bio samples and life-saving drugs to those who need them most.

The logistics company, which celebrated its 30th year in 2019, has invested significantly in a new fleet of environment-controlled vehicles to support the highly specialised demands of its new Bioscience Division.

Many of the vehicles are refrigerated and temperature-controlled, meaning that drugs and other medical-related goods can be stored at up to minus 48 degrees as they are transported to testing sites, hospitals and homes.

Speaking to the Newbury Weekly News from their headquarters in Hambridge Lane, Swift Logistics Group CEO Adrian Smith said:

We have always been very active in the medical and life science arenas. We attribute our success in an area where many others have failed to the way in which we engage with our clients to manage the unique and demanding processes and protocols which these marketplaces require.

The UK has, during the Covid crisis, finally been globally recognised for their world-leading expertise and experience in medical and drug development – much of which is based in the Thames Valley and Oxfordshire. This in turn has created a significant increase in demand for logistics with a focus on the bioscience market, with the specific controls relevant to this critical activity.

Rather than trying to deliver this service within our courier operation, we have instead elected to create a specialist division which is controlled and managed independently. This has ensured that we have a fleet of drivers and vehicles with the requisite skill, training and facilities to deliver best-in-class services in this vital sector.

This allows us to focus on getting these life-saving drugs into the arms of the people that need them.

Mr Smith said that it has been “A significant investment by us as a group and, we believe, the right sort of investment”.

He added: “We are proud to be doing this here in West Berkshire and to be part of the UK effort against Covid-19”.
